Easy All Natural Homeade Gravy

Gravy Adds a Nice Finishing Touch to a Chicken or Roast Beef Dinner

After I've made a pot roast or a chicken in the crockpot, I like to make an all natural gravy out of the resulting liquid. I can't give you the exact measurements because I just kind of throw it together, but here's how to make it:

How to Make the Gravy

First, remove most of the broth from the crock-pot with a ladle and spoon it into a saucepan. You can use a colander or sieve during this step to filter out pieces of fat or whatever. Taste the liquid to make sure it is salty enough. Although it will be already seasoned from whatever you seasoned the meat with, it may need a little more salt. Pour a little bit of buttermilk into a wide measuring cup or a bowl and whisk in a little flour. Meanwhile bring the meat drippings to a boil in the saucepan. As it simmers, pour in the buttermilk/flour mixture, whisking it as it goes in. Return it to a simmer, stirring constantly. Pour it back into the crock-pot with the meat and serve over bread, potatoes, rice, or even noodles.

Lower Calorie Version

If you're worried about fat and calories, you can use packaged organic chicken broth and nonfat milk instead of the meat drippings and buttermilk, which would still be healthier than using a gravy mix packet which may contain MSG or hydrogenated oils.
